Southern Tier agency hopes Walmart continues to assist employees with disabilities - WBNG-TV

DICKINSON (WBNG) — Walmart door greeters nationwide, some of whom have a disability, are concerned after the company announced it’s replacing the “customer hosts” position in 1,000 of its more than 5,000 stores around the country. It is not known which stores, if any, will be impacted in the Southern Tier.

“I don’t judge Walmart for the choices and decisions they’re making, but I do hope they’ll take every step possible to assist those individuals whose jobs are now in jeopardy as a result of the decision,” said Amy Howard, CEO of ACHIEVE.

ACHIEVE is a local not-for-profit that provides many services to adults 21 years of age and older who have disabilities. That includes helping many land jobs.

Walmart said that the greeting position would be gone by late April, but more recently Walmart’s President and CEO Greg Foran, said:

“Let me be clear: If any associate in this unique situation wants to continue working at Walmart, we should make every effort to make that happen.”

Some former door greeters within U.S. stores have moved to other positions such as self-checkout help.

Walmart said a host position will require more responsibilities such as being able to lift 25-pounds, climb ladders and stand for long periods of time.

“The need for additional or different skills to be able fulfill the new role is going to present a challenge for some individuals,” said Howard. “I think that when it does employers like Walmart, and others for that matter, could really assess the needs of those employees on case-by-case basis and hopefully work with an entity or agency like ACHIEVE to be able to identify a new role or a new employment option within that organization.”

Howard said she works with two individuals at ACHIEVE who are employees at Walmart. She said the retail giant has been a great to partner with, and if individuals did need to change their job duties to more requirements, ACHIEVE staff would have a conversation with them to figure out a position that fits well.

“Job requirements can shift and change just like they can for you in your position or me in mine,” Howard told 12 News.

ACHIEVE assists individuals who are disabled in Broome, Chenango and Tioga counties as young as 21-years-old.
