Walmart merging Albany fulfillment center - Times Union

Albany

The customer fulfillment center at the Walmart Supercenter at Crossgates Commons will close and its activities merged into a similar center in Bethlehem, Pa., a spokesman said Wednesday.

The 70 people employed at the Albany fulfillment center off Washington Avenue Extension will be offered transfers to area Walmart stores, Sams Clubs or different Walmart facilities. Severance packages will also be offered to qualified employees. The employees will be paid through May 24, said spokesman Phillip Keene, although the fulfillment center will be closed no later than March 15.

"We are hopeful we can retain as many people as possible," he said.

The fulfillment center in Albany opened in 2012 as one of several prototypes the retailer was exploring as it sought to learn how to best fulfill e-commerce orders.

The 260,000-square-foot, two-level Supercenter at Crossgates Commons is, by some accounts, Walmart's largest store, at least in the United States. It was built as a Sam's Club on one level and a traditional Walmart on the other. In 2008, the stores were merged into one Supercenter, and an escalator that also carries shopping carts was installed to connect the two levels.
