NBCUniversal International Group chairman Cesar Conde has been appointed to the board of directors at Walmart.
Conde is the only entertainment-focused executive to serve on the retail giant’s board at present. His appointment brings the Walmart board to 12 members. Walmart has gradually expanded in media and entertainment through its Vudu streaming platform and its investments in content ventures including Eko Interactive.
Conde oversees NBCUniversal’s operations outside North America, and he is chairman of NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises spearheading the company’s efforts to reach Hispanic consumers. He also serves on NBCUniversal’s executive committee and reports to CEO Steve Burke.
“Cesar brings strong skills as a global executive and expertise in brand management, finance, digital and media that will complement our board of directors’ experiences,” said Greg Penner, chairman of Walmart’s board. “We look forward to his strategic insights as we continue to drive the transformation of Walmart to better serve customers and win in an omni-channel world.”
Conde joined NBCUniversal in 2013 after 10 years with Telemundo rival Univision. At present he also serves on the board of PepsiCo.
“Today’s consumer landscape is changing, and I believe Walmart’s unique assets position the company to meet the changing demographics around the world,” Conde said. “I look forward to working with the board and management team to help drive the company’s strategic plans and continued growth.”
