Christmas Eve falls on a Monday in 2018. While nearly all schools are closed, some offices and businesses are open on Dec. 24, though some may have shortened hours. Here's a rundown of what's open and what's closed on Christmas Eve this year.
While Christmas Eve is not typically a federal holiday, President Donald Trump issued an executive order on Tuesday giving federal workers the day off. The move follows similar declarations by his predecessors when Christmas Eve falls on a Monday.
Christmas Eve is not one of the 12 observed state holidays in New Jersey, though many workers may opt to take the day off and some services could be limited. Christmas Day is the final state holiday of the year.
UPS will be delivering packages on Christmas Eve. There will be limited pickup service, though. Pickup service is available only for Air and international Air packages if it was prearranged by Dec. 20. UPS on-call pickup service and UPS Drop Boxes are available for Air and international Air packages. There will be no pickup or delivery services on Christmas Day, except for Express Critical.
FedEx will also be delivering packages on Christmas Eve. Some FedEx offices and services, however, will be closed or operating on limited hours on Dec. 24.
Walmart stores will close at 6 p.m. on Christmas Eve, so get those last-minute items before dark.
Costco locations will also close at 5 p.m. on Christmas Eve this year.
Shopper really waiting until the last minute might find Target to be their best option. Target will close at 10 p.m. on Christmas Eve.
Walgreens hours on Christmas Eve will generally follow the normal hours of the stores, including the 24-hour locations.
CVS stores will also keep to the company's 24-hour schedule and remain open both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
Rite Aid stores will be open on Christmas Eve, but will close at 7 p.m.
