Then man accused of shooting 11 people dead inside a Pittsburgh synagogue is scheduled to appear at a preliminary hearing in federal court Thursday. Robert Bowers, 46, is accused of firing on worshippers at the Tree of Life Synagogue in a hate-driven rampage. He has been indicted on 44 criminal counts, including hate crimes. He could face the death penalty.

Searchers recover black box from crashed Lion Air jet, reports say

An Indonesian search team recovered a black box Thursday from the Lion Air jet that crashed into the Java Sea earlier this week, according to local media reports.According to Broadcaster Kompas TV, the box was found in waters off Tanjung Karawang, West Java, by Indonesian divers from the National Search and Rescue Agency. The recovery of the black box will be the first step toward discovering why the Lion Air jet, a brand-new Boeing 737 Max 8, plunged into the Java Sea just minutes after taking off from Jakarta, killing all 189 people on board. 

Amazon's minimum wage increases

Amazon will be raising the minimum wage to $15 on Thursday for all U.S. full-time, part-time, seasonal and temporary employees, including temps hired by agencies. The wage increase also includes employees at Whole Foods. Members of Congress, most notably Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vermont, have criticized Amazon for paying its warehouse workers too little as it has grown to be the world's second most valuable company and its CEO the world’s richest person. Amazon currently has more than 250,000 employees, and plans to hire more than 100,000 seasonal employees this holiday season. 

Execution set for inmate who chose electric chair over injection

Tennessee is scheduled to execute a convicted murder on Thursday who said he would prefer to be put to death using the electric chair rather than undergo the "torture" of lethal injection. Edmund Zagorski, 63, requested electrocution Oct. 8 after the Tennessee Supreme Court upheld the state's use of a controversial lethal injection cocktail – three drugs medical experts said would lead to an extremely painful death. Zagorski said he preferred 35 seconds of two 1,750-volt shocks over a lethal injection that could take up to 18 minutes to kill him. The electric chair hasn't been used in Tennessee in 11 years, and the maker of the state's chair says he's worried it may not work properly.

No more lines: Walmart introduces new purchase option in-store

Starting Thursday, Walmart shoppers can use a digital map to find items they are looking for and purchase it right in the aisle they find it. Avoiding busy cash registers, shoppers can simply find an employee in the section they are buying from and pay for their items. Walmart introduced this new feature in the retailer's app to make this holiday season more convenient and simple for customers and gift buyers.
