Is Walmart open on Columbus Day? Is Target open?

Columbus Day is a federal holiday, meaning banks and other businesses, as well as most government offices, are closed.

The same can't be said for Walmart.

Walmart will be open regular hours on Columbus Day (Oct. 8, 2018). Walmart Supercenters will remain open 24-hours a day; other stores will also have regular hours. That means a day at work for Walmart's 2.3 million U.S. associates.

Target stores will also be open regular hours on Columbus Day.

The chain recently announced it was hiring about 120,000 seasonal team members for its 1,839 stores in the U.S., a 20 percent increase over last year. Current employees will also be offered extra hours. Another 7,500 seasonal employees will be added to Target's distribution and fulfillment centers that replenish products to store and fulfill online orders.

Target offers a minimum hourly wage of $12 an hour.

Columbus Day sales

While Columbus Day isn't considered a major holiday for many, it's a day retailers mark with sales and discounts.

Mattresses, electronics, televisions, furniture and clothing are all popular items for sale on Columbus Day. And since most malls and other retailers are open regular hours, if you're one of the lucky ones who has the day off, you might want to hit up the stores.
