TUMWATER, Wash. - Tumwater Police are trying to figure out why a man went on a carjacking and shooting rampage that ended in his death outside a Walmart store on Sunday.

Two armed civilians are being hailed as heroes for running in and stopping the gunman.

"The first thing I did was reach for my gun and I told her to run," said Jesse Zamora as his wife Megan ran for safety.

He and another man ran towards the gunman, identified by police as 44-year-old Tim Day of McCleary.

Police said it all began when Day started driving the wrong way down the highway and city streets. He tried to to take cars at gunpoint from six different people.

He shot and slightly wounded at 16-year-old boy in the finger, then took off in the teen's car to Walmart.

Police said he fired a shot inside the store at the gun counter, then reloaded his gun with ammunition from the store.

They said he then walked outside and tried to carjack Rickey Fievez' car, and shot him twice. Fievez'

"He came up to the car, shot my dad and was like, 'get out of the vehicle,'" said Kyle Fievez, "My mom looked over and saw him just slouched down and she goes, 'at that time I kinda thought he was paralyzed."

The car then lunged forward, so they said Day headed off further into the parking lot, when Zamora and the other man stopped him.

"The other gentleman with the other firearm went up and I heard him tell him, 'put it down,' or something," said Zamora.

Day was then shot and killed by the second armed civilian. Police haven't released his identity yet, except that he's from Oakville.

"I think we we both had a mutual understanding that, 'let's just do what we have to do to protect all these people here,'" said Zamora.

"There was another gentleman behind me and mentioned that, 'you saved our lives,' and I said, 'no I don't think I did. I just told him I was at the right place at the right time,'" added Zamora.

"It sucks that it got to that situation, But I feel is someone wouldn't have put him down, then he would have taken other people's lives," said Kyle Fievaz.

Investigators said Day had been in and out of prison for various crimes.

Rickey Fievez remains in critical condition and will need more surgery due to shrapnel in his spine.

The Walmart store in Tumwater is set to reopen on Tuesday.
