Lower Macungie Walmart shooting was second incident in recent years involving area police

The police-involved fatal shooting outside the Lower Macungie Township Walmart was the second such incident in the region in the past three years.

In December 2015, Stroud Area Regional police shot and killed Andrew J. Todd, 20, inside a Walmart after he refused to drop two pistols and a machete he was carrying. The shooting was determined to be justified.

The Lower Macungie incident was also the third time gunfire erupted at one of the retail giant’s locations since Saturday.

In Durham, N.C., an argument Wednesday afternoon between two men in the produce aisle of a Walmart left two people injured.

According to the local ABC station, one man fired several shots, striking the other in the stomach. A woman working in the eye care center inside the store was hit in the ankle.

Police were seeking an 18-year-old man in the case.

In Utah, police say four people were wounded Saturday when someone opened fire on a rap group stopped in the parking lot of a Walmart in West Valley City, according to the Fox affiliate there. Three of the victims were from the group. The fourth was a bystander.

In October 2015, a man randomly fired a semi-automatic rifle outside a Wilkes-Barre Walmart, provoking a shootout with police that left him wounded. The man was convicted of attempted murder and other charges.
