After bomb threat on bathroom stall, Weaverville Walmart evacuated, closed for hours

After a bomb threat discovered Tuesday morning, the Weaverville Walmart was evacuated and closed for three hours.

The Weaverville Police Department says an employee of a 24-hour Walmart noticed a writing on a bathroom stall that said “a bomb is near,” and reported it to them around 5 a.m.

Police responded and evacuated the store, which remained closed for the next three hours.

A Buncombe K-9 unit swept the building.

The Walmart reopened at about 8:15 a.m. with no bomb found.

The Weaverville police chief says though this was found to be a hoax, his department responds to reports like these, to ensure the community is kept safe.

"It's never funny. You're talking about people's lives, their safety. People need to know they are safe, comfortable no matter where they go. For someone to do that, something like that, it's not a joke, it's not funny, it's taken very seriously," said Chief Alan Watt.

Chief Watt says there will be a follow-up investigation.
