Walmart has installed a Pickup Tower in its third Birmingham area store.
This new addition is at the Walmart Supercenter at Colonial Promenade Trussville.
The towers are 16-feet-tall "high-tech vending machines" used to fulfill online orders.
"Walmart remains committed to finding fresh ways to help our customers save both time and money," Store Manager John Welsh said in a statement. "We are pleased to bring this new technology – the Pickup Tower – to the Birmingham area, so our customers can make shopping with us even more efficient and enjoyable."
Anyone ordering online for in-store pickup will receive a notification when the order is ready.
A customer who arrives to receive his order goes to the Pickup Tower and scan the bar code sent to his smartphone. The store says the customer usually gets his order in less than a minute.
The Pickup Towers are part of an $11 billion reinvestment Walmart is making in its stores, including remodels and online grocery pickup.
