Police: Suspect in custody after woman shot at Tabb Walmart

A suspect is in custody after a shooting occurred Thursday morning at the Tabb Walmart in York County, according to the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office.

One woman was shot shortly before 9:30 a.m.Thursday, officials said. She was transported to a local hospital, although police are currently unsure of the extent of the woman’s injuries, according to York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Shawn Kekoa-Dearhart.

The shooting suspect has been identified as a woman. She was taken into custody 10-15 minutes after the incident occurred, Kekoa-Dearhart said.

Witnesses told police the suspect charged at the woman, although police are uncertain if they were shoppers or employees, Kekoa-Dearhart said. She added both women had cars in the parking lot.

The Walmart is located at 2601 George Washington Memorial Highway.

Monica Hall, who was at the Walmart anxiously trying to get information, said Thursday that her daughter called hysterically from within the store. Hall said that alll she could hear was "shooter." Hall came straight from Williamsburg to get to the store and learned that her daughter was safe, she said.

The daughter, Brenda Towner, was working in the bakery. Hall said with the way things are and being a mom, she feared the worst. About 10:30 a.m., Hall was waiting for her daughter to come out of the store.

No York County schools were placed on lockdown due to the shooting, said division spokeswoman Katherine Goff.

“We remain in close contact with the YPSO, but as they have the suspect in custody we have not been advised to adjust beyond our normal security procedures,” Goff said.

No other information is available from police at this time.
