Customers at Muscle Shoals' Walmart Supercenter have a new option for checking out their purchases.
The retailer has integrated its "Scan & Go" technology into the store, the first appearance for it in Alabama. Scan & Go allows customers to scan items as they shop in-store and skip the checkout line.
And down the road in Athens, that city's Walmart Supercenter is the latest to install the Pickup Tower, where customers can shop online and pickup their items at the store.
Scan & Go involves an app, which customers can download to a mobile phone and open inside the store. The app allows customers to scan the barcode of each item they want to purchase. If there's no barcode, customers can look up the item with "Find an Item."
Customers can see the running total of the items in their carts as they shop. It also allows checkout and paying through the app. As customers leave, they can show receipts from your phone to an employee on the way out.
The Pickup Tower is a 16-feet-tall "high-tech vending machine" used to fulfill online orders.
Anyone ordering online for in-store pickup will receive a notification when the order is ready.
A customer who arrives to receive his order goes to the Pickup Tower and scans the bar code sent to his smartphone. The store says the customer usually gets his order in less than a minute.
The Pickup Towers are part of an $11 billion reinvestment Walmart is making in its stores, including remodels and online grocery pickup.
