An East Greenville woman who thought her grandson was in jail and needed bond money is out $4,500 in Walmart gift cards, according to borough police.
Police said a borough woman was told by a person identifying himself as a police officer that her grandson was in need of money to post bail.
The victim was instructed to buy $4,500 in Walmart gift cards. The person then called the victim to get the gift card numbers.
After she gave the information, the victim learned her grandson was safe and not in custody.
Within minutes, the gift cards were spent at a Walmart at another location in the United States, police.
East Greenville police advised anyone who receives such a call to contact a law enforcement agency.
No law enforcement agency, they noted, would request bail money via gift cards or other similar mechanisms.
Further, they noted, it would be highly unusual not to be able to speak to the person in custody.
Police said Walmart is cooperating in the investigation. Anyone with information is ask to call 215-679-5194.
