Walmart.com's Top Selling Products Of 2017 By State

Crayons were the most-purchased products on Walmart.com by residents of Alabama.

The fact that the most-purchased product on Walmart.com in 2017 for the state of Alaska was RV and marine antifreeze should shock no one. Frequently freezing temps likely drive demand for antifreeze. Likewise, that healthy-eating Californians buy a lot of protein powder should also come as no surprise. Just as the number of refrigerators purchased in Massachusetts is likely linked to the more than 250,000 college and university students attending the state's 114 institutions of higher learning.

Some of the top selling products purchased on Walmart.com in 2017 make sense for each state's population, while others are more curious.

"With more than triple the assortment compared to holiday 2016, Walmart offered customers in 2017 even more opportunities to find low prices on a great selection of products. While commonly-purchased items like water, paper towels and dry goods continue to be popular across the country, we also found some interesting trends like the ones included in the graphic," says Danit Marquardt, Walmart spokesperson.

Why is that the bestselling product in Maine is brownie mix while neighboring New Hampshire buys more cinnamon-flavored toothpaste than anything else? Or why Michiganders clamor for lavender-scented cleaning products while Pennsylvanians buy loads and loads of plastic hangers (could be the college students again).

Many purchases are consumables, such as Washington state's need for vanilla frosting, Arkansas' love of chocolate, Missouri's demand for Life Savers candy and Minnesota's preference for Flamin' Hot Cheetos.

There are a wide variety of food products purchased through Walmart.com, it turns out. North Dakota buys lots of watermelon-flavored gum, the District of Columbia buys Great Value French Fried Onions, North Carolina buys mayonnaise and Oklahoma buys barbeque sauce. Drinks are also quite popular, with residents of Indiana buying instant coffee, South Dakotans stocking up on orange juice, Ohioans loving their grape-flavored drink and Louisianans ordering root beer extract.

Consumers in other states are more focused on hard goods, like Oregon's humidifiers, Mississippi's oil-less fryers and Rhode Island's Christmas lights.
