Defuniak Springs Police: Foot chase in Walmart leads to arrest

DEFUNIAK SPRINGS, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - According to the Defuniak Springs City Marshal and police, officers learned about several fraudulent prescriptions called into pharmacies Saturday morning.

They said a pharmacist from Walmart told them about a call from someone claiming to be an office assistant requesting a prescription for an elderly man for promethazine with codeine.

The caller also reportedly requested a "Z pack" and provided information from a legitimate doctor in Madison.

Police said the pharmacist called the doctor to confirm it and the doctor denied knowing the patient.

Officials said police took a report from a Winn Dixie for the same type of incident.

They said officers responded to Walmart Saturday morning to the suspect attempting to get fraudulent prescriptions.

The man reportedly began to run towards the garden center area when officers approached the pharmacy.

Officers detained the suspect in the middle of the store.

Police identified the suspect as Wesley Harper, 31, of Tampa.

After a search, officials said they found a fake driver’s license in the name of a female.

He was reportedly taken to Walton County Jail and charged with Attempting to Obtain a Controlled Substance by Fraud, Possession of a Forged Driver’s License, and Resisting an Officer Without Violence.

Police said he is awaiting first appearance.
