A suspect was arrested Wednesday morning in connection with Christmas Day burglaries at the Walmart and Toys R Us stores in Williston, according to the Williston Police Department.
A Walmart employee helped identify the car apparently used by Nathan L. Giffin, 32, of Essex, in the Dec. 25 break-in, Sgt. Bart Chamberlain said.
Giffin will face two charges of burglary on Jan. 18 in Superior Court in Burlington, he added: In addition to the Walmart incident the suspect is implicated in a burglary at Toys R Us.
Boot tracks linked the two incidents, and Giffin admitted to arresting officers he was the responsible party, Chamberlain said.
Giffin fled both stores, empty-handed, after tripping their respective alarms, he added: "It was a painful end. I guess you could say he got the just desserts of a Scrooge — trying to rob stores on Christmas."
According to an earlier police department statement, Giffin arrived at the Walmart parking lot and stacked wooden pallets to reach a window, which he smashed to gain entrance.
Surveillance photos show a man whose face is mostly covered with a hood and mask, wearing a light-colored jacket with dark sleeves.
He was toting a large sack and a baseball bat at the scene.
A station wagon associated with the suspect was photographed in the Walmart parking lot — although its license plates were obscured or had been removed, according to the release.
Giffin had borrowed the car from his downstairs neighbor, Sgt. Chamberlain said.
Police say a door was found damaged at the nearby Toys R Us store.
