Police have taken into custody an armed woman inside a car who threatened to kill herself in a Walmart parking lot Friday.
Stafford County Sheriff's deputies and a SWAT team were on scene armed with guns as authorities negotiated with the woman for several hours before the situation ended peacefully.
Police first responded to the situation at the Walmart Supercenter on Garrisonville Road in Stafford at approximately 5:15 a.m. after receiving a call about a gunshot, which detectives later confirmed to be true.
According to the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office, the woman, 57, repeatedly asked for police to kill her and attempted to provoke a lethal response from law enforcement by pointing her weapon at herself and law enforcement. Police said she later told investigators she did not have the courage to kill herself and hoped they would do it.
The woman, who resides in Florida, has been facing several personal problems when she pulled over in Stafford with the intention to commit suicide, according to police.
The subject is now being held on an emergency custody order and is undergoing medical treatment at Mary Washington Hospital.
While the incident was ongoing, Mine Road between Garrisonville Road and Greenspring Drive was closed to traffic as deputies set up a large perimeter to ensure public safety.
ABC7's Q McCray reported from the scene earlier Friday.
