RINDGE — A bomb threat closed Walmart Tuesday evening for more than an hour, until police determined the call was a “probable hoax,” according to a Rindge police news release.
Rindge police, fire and rescue officials responded to the Walmart on Route 202 in Rindge at 7:17 p.m. for the reported bomb threat, the news release said. The building was empty of people when police arrived at the scene, according to Rindge Police Det. Rachel Malynowski.
“The building had been evacuated for about five minutes prior to my arrival,” Malynowski said this morning.
Police and fire officials searched the building, focusing on a men’s bathroom near the back, where the threat had been directed, Malynowski said. Nothing was found, she said.
Police reviewed Walmart surveillance footage and concluded “there was no threat to the public,” according to the news release.
“I want to reiterate that it appears at no time that there was any risk to the public,” Malynowski said. “Nothing was found.”
Assistant Manager Robert Murray decided to resume normal business operations about an hour and 10 minutes after police received the call, according to the news release. Malynowski declined to specify how the bomb threat originated or to whom it was directed.
“This is an open investigation and I am not going to release the origin of the threat at this point,” Malynowski said. “Only that we (police) received a 911 call regarding it.”
Malynowski is investigating this as a “probable hoax,” which is a class B felony.
“If we bring a criminal charge, I will release more information at that time,” she said. Walmart officials declined to comment this morning.
