Shop with a Cop is an annual event held at the Walmart store in Cleveland. The event is hosted by the store and Resurrection Ministries, a local organization consisting of various congregations working to pay it forward for those in need.
"This year we were able to help out 33 kids," said Debra Terry of Walmart.
According to Walmart Asset Protection Manager Tim Hughes, five more children were helped at his year's event compare to last year's Shop with a Cop.
"It's all about giving more than you get," he said. "It's about paying it forward."
Children who participate in Shop with a Cop typically come from underprivileged families who might not be able to give Christmas to them. These children are given gift cards to shop around the store either for themselves or for others.
"We put them together with a cop and they shop," said Terry.
Law enforcement officers from Liberty County's constable offices, the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, the Texas Highway Patrol, Cleveland ISD's Police Department and others participated in the event.
According to Terry, Shop with a Cop pairs children with law enforcement officers in order to teach them not to be afraid of the police when they encounter them in public.
"Not all officers are bad," she said.
Juanita Lewis of Resurrection Ministries says the organization could not pull off the event without help from others.
"We're just thankful for all the donations that came in to meet the kids' needs," she said.
