Protesters dressed in holiday costumes picketed in front of a Phoenix Walmart on Thursday contesting the company's holiday-pay policy.

Members from the group Making Change at Walmart (MCAW), the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 99 and elected officials gathered with signs and holiday costumes protesting Walmart's policy that allows workers to earn a paid day off for each holiday worked instead of additional holiday pay.

Randy Parraz, campaign director of MCAW, said the event was to call attention to how the company is treating its workers during the holidays.

"They want to make a claim that this is a special time of year, but if you work at Walmart, it's not special for you," Parraz said. "They're basically saying, 'Yeah you can get holiday pay, you got to earn it.' "

Last year, Walmart changed its paid time-off policy so that workers accumulate the time off into one lump sum of hours, which they can use at their discretion, according to the company. A certain amount can roll over to the next year or be cashed out.

Picketers dressed in Santa Claus costumes and masks of the popular holiday character "The Grinch" walked in front of a Walmart near north 51st Avenue and Indian School Road in Phoenix.

Almost 30 people chanted and handed out pamphlets to customers in front of the store.

State Sen. Martin Quezada, D-Phoenix, joined the group.

"They (Walmart) should be respecting the values of the communities they are in," Quezada said. "They're in a community, right here in Maryvale, which is a community of hard-working families. These are people that value family, employers that respect their workers and treat their workers right. Right now Walmart is choosing not to do that anymore."

Walmart officials issued the following statement to The Arizona Republic in response to the protests:

“Walmart’s Paid Time Off program is designed to give associates more stability in their lives. Both full- and part-time associates receive a paid day for each Walmart holiday, and it’s important that our people have the control and flexibility to decide how they use that extra paid time. At the end of the year, hourly associates can rollover some unused PTO and can cash out the remainder to use as they please.”

MCAW held similar protests in other cities across the United States, including the home of Walmart's corporate headquarters in Bentonville, Arkansas.
