Police are trying to determine the appropriate charge to file against a person suspected of setting fires at the Walmart in Cedar Park last week, said Cedar Park Police Commander Bryan Wukasch. The person has not been arrested but has been talking to officers, Wukasch said.
Police plan to release an update on the case shortly, he said.
The Cedar Park Fire Department was notified at 1:42 a.m. Nov. 21 about the fires set at two locations in the store at 201 Walton Way. A sprinkler system in the building was able to control the fires so that firefighters could quickly extinguish them.
Walmart spokesman Charles Crowson declined Tuesday to release an estimate of damages from the fires at the store at 201 Walton Way in Cedar Park saying it is against company policy to do so. The grocery part of the store reopened Monday, he said.
“We will continue to open other parts of the store as they are cleaned, sterilized and restocked,” said Crowson.
He said the store is focusing now on reopening its pharmacy. He declined to say exactly when other parts of the store would be reopened. He also declined to say whether the system went off in the entire store or just the part that was burned.
“When you are in confined area and you have a fire burning for 2 to 3 to 4 minutes an entire building can be filled with smoke,” he said.
