Walmart Promises A 30-Second Return, With Minimum Wage Labor?

For years Walmart had a reputation for having big stores, no match for the traditional neighborhood stores that went belly up upon its arrival. Now, it is developing a reputation for being big on promises.

Like the promise that, effective next month, the company will cut the return time for unwanted merchandise purchased on line to 45 seconds.

That’s certainly good news for consumers who buy things on line frequently, and end up returning unwanted items.

How will Walmart do it? With an app, Mobile Express Returns, that will speed up and simplify the process of returning an item purchased on line to one of Walmart stores.

The App will allow customers to fill out all the required return forms on line, and therefore spend less time waiting in front of the return counter.

Apparently, Walmart is trying to catch up with Amazon on technology, while simultaneously leveraging its multiple store locations, in a bid to make it easier for customers to shop on Walmart.com and Walmart.

The trouble is that the App alone cannot help Walmart keep its 45-second return promise, unless the employees behind the counter have the right skills, the right training, and the right motivation to work together with the technology to expedite the return.

That’s certainly too much to ask from someone who gets paid barely the minimum wage. Unless Walmart has a secret plan in place to raise wages enough to beat the Fight For $15 Minimum Wage Movement, so it can recruit the employees who will execute on its big promise.
