Walmart Inc. (WMT) has long relied on food stamp recipients for a significant portion of its business, and now the company is making it easier for those receiving government assistance to shop for food online.
The company announced that it will allow food stamp recipients to order food online. However, federal guidelines demand that people receiving Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits to pay for their food in person.
Walmart will allow customers at certain locations to order the food online and pick it up at the store.
The move comes as the company looks to hold on to a key segment of its business that rival Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN) has targeted. Earlier this year Amazon cut the price of an Amazon Prime membership for those receiving government assistance in half.
