Farmville Walmart evacuated after threatening call, police believe it's a hoax

UPDATE: 7 p.m.

The Farmville Herald is reporting that suspects have been identified after Walmart had to be evacuated Friday afternoon.

Police say no charges are pending as the investigation continues.

“The incident at the Walmart in town has been investigated and resolved and the area is now safe and secure,” town officials said in a statement. “There was a threat called in that ultimately turned out to be false. The suspects have been identified. There is no reason to believe that there is a risk for a further threat.”

UPDATE: 2:20 p.m.

The Farmville Herald is reporting that the Farmville Police chief said they believe the call came from a would-be scam.

Chief Ellington said a Walmart employee was trying to get a loan through an Internet deal, when the person realized it was a scam. When the scam artist realized they were not going to get the money, police said the scam artist made the call to Walmart.

Police said there has been no shooting and no one is injured.

The newspaper said that Walmart remains closed.

FARMVILLE, Va. (WSET) -- Police in Farmville have evacuated the Walmart following an alleged call from a person in possession of a gun inside the store, according to the Farmville Herald.

The newspaper is reporting that the person is suicidal.

Police said they have searched the building and were unable to locate the caller.

The newspaper reported that police are planning to search Walmart again and stressed there has been no shooting.
